Book Summary

"Ms. Sandberg again steps up to share her experiences and help people overcome unimaginable adversity and build resilience."

Ms. Sheryl Sandberg is the current Chief Operating Officer for Facebook, and one of a handful of internationally recognized female leaders in the technology industry. In 2013, she wrote Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, where she stressed the importance of supportive spouses and equal parenting for women. She frequently referenced and thanked her own husband, David Goldberg, as a supportive spouse who led by example. Mr. Goldberg suddenly died in 2015. In her latest book, Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy, co-written with Professor Adam Grant, Ms. Sandberg again steps up to share her experiences and help people overcome unimaginable adversity and build resilience.

"...this is not a book focusing on quantitative or psychological research to make a point. Nor is this book a rags-to-riches "how-to" guide."

Readers who are familiar with Ms. Sandberg's previous book Lean In and Prof. Grant's best seller Originals need to understand exactly what message Option B is trying to convey, and what story it is not trying to tell. In Option B, Ms. Sandberg writes, "Widows of all backgrounds are more than twice as likely to live in poverty as married women", but this is not a book focusing on quantitative or psychological research to make a point. Nor is this book a rags-to-riches "how-to" guide. Ms. Sandberg is perfectly aware of her privilege, and she details these aspects of her life as a means to share heartfelt and personal recollections about Mr. Goldberg and how she overcame her own grief.

"Empowering communities builds collective resilience."

Ms. Sandberg believes, "Empowering communities builds collective resilience". In addition to writing Option B, she also created the website OptionB.org as a platform for people to find each other, to comfort one another, and to grow together. The website currently covers a wide range of topics, including Grief & Loss, Health, Illness and Injury, and Abuse & Sexual Assault. Additionally, people can email and suggest topics that are important to them.

"She has leveraged her social influence to share her experience and to build support communities for every walk of life. "

Through Option B, Ms. Sandberg has transformed her sorrow into a greater good. She has leveraged her social influence to share her experience and to build support communities for every walk of life. She has delivered not just a motivating message about grief and resilience, but also shows the way to a better future. For Ms. Sheryl Sandberg, Option B is just the beginning.

I highly recommend this book and the website https://optionb.org/ .
